Procrastination is a curse

Blogged by: Kitty on Monday, August 29, 2011   |  Leave a comment Facebook comments: comments

As mentioned in the previous post, I'm currently working on a project which involves a new website. It is actually a project I started a few years back but I never got around to finishing it and I eventually abandoned it in my pursue of other things. But now I decided to bring it up again and continue working on it. I'm hoping to finish it by October.

I also mentioned in one of tweets about my plan to interview a blogger. I have not decided on how I would do it, nor who I'd pick to interview. It's still in the planning stage, I'm not even sure if I would do this eventually.

I also need to update Kitty-Kat.org and Amalina.org. I've neglected them for quite a long time now, especially Kitty-Kat.org. I haven't blogged on that site for 2 months. o_O I seriously has nothing to blog there. Oh woe me!
And I need to integrate HTML editor into Amalina.org so that managing the content would be so much easier1.

And oh, there's also the blog shop template that I need to work on. Oh dear, why do I have so much work to do?

Two words, I procrastinate. Yes, that's right. The bane to success and a curse to motivation. Putting things off until the last minute is a habit hard to remove and we're all guilty of it at some point. Now why do I like to delay things? Why won't I do the things that I should be doing the moment I get them? And when I arrive at the end of the road, I would start panicking and blaming myself. I would promise myself not to do it again and yet, when the opportunity comes, I would start the cycle over again. I think it has to do with laziness. I am lazy and should be spanked for it.

Krystal's jewellery store is finally having a promotion for her Autumn Fall piece! I love all her designs. Previously I bought these two from her store:

necklace1

The first piece I bought, the Snow Drift necklace.

necklace2

Light rose with green Peridot leaf (Spring)

I really want to have the awesome Autumn Fall piece but I really need to save up for the December trip. Ugh.

Guide to free domains and free hosting sites

Blogged by: Kitty on Sunday, August 28, 2011   |  Leave a comment Facebook comments: comments

I've been receiving a lot of questions lately and the most common one is mostly relating to "free domains". For everybody's sake, and because I don't want to keep on repeating myself over and over again, I shall answer the question here.

Question: Do you know where I can get free domain?
Answer: Honestly, there isn't any websites that offer to give out free domains as such. However, free domains can still be obtained through contests or, on very rare occasions, through giveaways. There are also domains that can be obtained by "adopting" them. These domains are only borrowed or leased to you. The legal owner is still the one who bought the domains.

Another frequently asked question is, "Where can I find free host?"
This question is rather easy to answer. Free hosting websites are abundant. In fact, it is not an exaggeration if I say free hosting sites are practically littered across the WWW. The question is, where can you find good and reliable host?
Good and reliable hosts aren't as easy to locate, because you need to know and identify them before you get hosted by them. And in many cases, hostees only find out the truth after they get hosted and it is too late to back out. So here, I will list out web hosts that I know to be trustworthy and reliable.

Sites where you can adopt domains:
http://innocentsky.com/adopt.php
http://unloved-heart.net/adopt/
http://www.flaunt.nu/adopt
http://www.starszz.com/site-news/domain-name-adoption/
http://fanfusion.org/domain-requests
http://fan-sites.org/2009/03/18/adoptable-domains-and-sites/

Free web hosting sites:
CBD-Hosting.net
Innocent Sky.com
Secretkiss.org

The list does not include those who offer subdomain hosting on their own websites1.

Also, please take note of the rules, terms and conditions that are stated on each of the free domain adoption/hosting sites before you make any decision. Most of the sites will have requirements that you need to follow so it is advisable for you to read them carefully and thoroughly. This is to avoid complications, or in the worst case, to avoid termination of your adoption/hosting.

1 I offer subdomain hosting on my websites: nekonette.com and kitty-kat.org.

Just to share this with you guys, Nekonette.com has been featured as Site of the Day on Dorkistic Designs. This is truly an honour to me. :) But the screenshot shows Nekonette's layout looks terrible. :/

Speaking of browsers, I am really hoping everyone would stop using Internet Explorer 6. The decade-old1 browser is out-of-date and does not follow web standards and even though I believe web designers and developers alike should try their best to make their designs compatible with every browsers, but making adjustments for IE6 is such a pain. Even Microsoft is campaigning to get everyone to ditch this old browser and encourage users to upgrade to a much later version (IE8+).

Unfortunately, this may well be a little difficult to persuade the non-techies. People who are no so web-savvy will not be able to fully grasp why IE6 should be abandoned. In fact, about 9.7% people of the world still make use of it. We need to educate these people.

If you support this cause, paste the following codes into your website:

<!--[if lt IE 7]> <div style=' clear: both; height: 59px; padding:0 0 0 15px; position: relative;'> <a href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home?ocid=ie6_countdown_bannercode"><img src="http://storage.ie6countdown.com/assets/100/
images/banners/warning_bar_0000_us.jpg" border="0" height="42" width="820" alt="You are using an outdated browser. For a faster, safer browsing experience, upgrade for free today." /></a></div> <![endif]-->

If a visitor visits your site using IE6, the message below will show up.

1 IE6 was introduced in 2001.

I was reading Chazzie's post on PHP layout and it prompted me to write something about it in turn.

A couple of years ago, when I first made the attempt to write my own PHP layout, I stumbled across CuteNews, a news publishing script (dubbed as simple blogging tool). For a complete noob like myself, Cutenews was like a gift from Heaven. Not only it was easy enough to use, it was also a script which made use of flat-file storage, and in my mind, had saved me from the worries over MySQL.

Anyway, those days were over the moment my Cutenews was bombarded with 50+ spam comments each day. It was such a tedious job weeding out all those spams from genuine comments. I then decided to install anti-spam protection; first CAPTCHA then RE-CAPTCHA. However, those efforts were futile. Not only the spam comments kept on coming, but there were also spam posts.

For the longest time I had to endure it since I couldn't find any script that could replace Cutenews and as easy to implement. The spams were driving me nuts and while searching for alternative scripts, I found out that the issues on CuteNews extended far beyond spams. The script was known to be insecure with "multiple cross-site scripting vulnerabilities"1 and prone to be "injected with PHP and other malicious code"2.

Determined to get rid of Cutenews forever, I made the leap from one different blogging system to another3 and since then I've never looked back.

New layout!

I've decided to put up a new layout for this blog. This time, the theme is based around the element of elegance. I called this new layout Royal Crimson. It's inspired from Osvaldas Valutis' single-page website layout. I haven't totally finished designing it so expect a few changes here and there within these few days. If you have anything to say about this layout, you are most welcome. :)

I shall be making another layout like this (different colour, of course) and submit to Blogskins.com for the competition.

I just want to share with everyone that I will be graduating this September! :D My degree classification is Lower Second Class Honours which means I am qualified to apply for Masters degree (as a matter of fact, I've already handed in my application form last month).

On another note, I've finally finished creating a blogshop template for a client and getting paid for it. I'm hoping more customers would be interested in my website designs. So here's a free plug for my website templates shop!

CREATIV WEBSITE THEMES

I'd probably do a major website overhaul next month for CREATIV, I'm kind of sick with the current layout. Hopefully I'd come up with something sleek and glossy. XD

50 random facts about me - Part 2

Continuing my journey of listing 50 facts about myself. Today I'll post #11-#20.

#11. I am an Anglophile. For the longest time, I've been wanting to visit England myself. Ever since I was young, I was fascinated by the culture, which resulted in me hoarding books on English history. :)

#12. I can barely cook. I don't like cooking, unless it's something or for someone I like.

#13. I like to take afternoon naps. This habit started when I was in high school. It was too tiring and hot to do anything in the afternoon so I opted to go to sleep instead.

#14. I am an attention-seeker. What can I say, I'm a Leo after all. ;)

#15. I like cute things. This involves hoarding cute and colourful stationeries which end up stored in boxes and unused.

#16. I wanted to get married by the time I reach 25 years old. But now that I'm 25 and still unmarried, I think I'll stretch it to 28.

#17. I once dreamt of owning a house near the beach. Now I know it's just not possible because there aren't any available lands near the beaches.

#18. I think people who eat bugs are weird. I don't mean any offence here, it's just how I feel.

#19. I'm acrophobic.

#20. I think cats are awesome creatures. They can be graceful and ferocious at the same time. It's been said, "you don't own the cats. The cats own you." Hahaha!

Freebies: Blogger layout (Vintage Memories)

Blogged by: Kitty on Friday, August 12, 2011   |  Leave a comment
Commentators: Blogger Chazzie Minho,

I made a new Blogger layout, it's called Vintage Memories. This layout was born from a desire to create a vintage-look design, hence the name Vintage Memories. The colour scheme was inspired from a Wordpress theme I created long ago; brownish yellow/yellow shades and hues are almost always associated with vintage designs which is why I incorporated them into the layout. Different shades of blue are also used because I feel they complement the yellow/brown colours well.

How to use the layout:
- Replace the twitter username with your own.

- Replace the Blogger Follower gadget with your own.

- Find the codes below and replace YOURBLOGNAME with your blog name.
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Your Blog's Title" href="http://YOURBLOGNAME.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://YOURBLOGNAME.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" />

- Find these codes and replace the USERID and BLOGID with your own user ID and your blog's ID:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/USERID/blogs/BLOGID?alt=json-in-script&callback=listLabels"></script>

The layout is available for download on Blogskins but I also provide a download link here:

Tutorial: How to code a Classic Blogger layout - Part 2

Blogged by: Kitty on Wednesday, August 10, 2011   |  Leave a comment
Commentators: Anonymous Anonymous, Blogger Kitty,
Facebook comments: comments

Right, this is the second part of the How to code a Classic Blogger layout series. In Part 1 I've explained how to code the basic structure of the layout so in this part we'll continue on how to add navigation links.

Step 1
Okay, first we are going to create a list. Open up the HTML document that we created in Part 1. Go to the sidebar section (where it says <div id="sidebar"> </div>) The navigation links in this example will be vertically positioned.

The reason why we create a list is that, this is the easiest way to create navigation links. Paste the following code right after the <div id="sidebar">:

<ul>
<li><a href="link1.html">Link 1</a></li>
<li><a href="link2.html">Link 2</a></li>
<li><a href="link3.html">Link 3</a></li>
</ul>

For now, the navigation will look like the example above. But of course we wouldn't leave it like that, as it doesn't look presentable. So we will have to polish it up.

Step 2
Go to the CSS section as we are going to write up the styling for the navigation menu. The first step is to assign an id to the <ul>. This is to remove the elements that give the appearance of a list (like the bullets).

#navigation {
margin: 0 auto;
padding: 0;
list-style: none;
}

Then apply the id to the <ul>:

<ul id="navigation">

The list now looks like this:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Technically we're done with the navigation. But it looks rather too simple. So we'll spice it up a bit.

Step 3
Paste this codes into your stylesheet.

#navigation a {
display: block;
width: 150px;
background-color: #ffccff;
border-left: 5px solid orange;
padding-left: 5px;
color: red;
}

This will make the background of each of the links to have background colour #ffccff and red for the links. Display:block makes the links to be rendered as a block element which means only one link for each line. The width of the links will be 150px and we assign an orange colour for the left border. The links will be shifted/padded 5px from the left.

Step 4
If you want to add some excitement to the links, we will throw in the :hover selector.

#navigation a:hover {
background-color: #ff99ff;
color: #ffffff;
}

Step 5
Lastly, we also need to space out the links from each other so that they don't look to crowded.

#navigation li {
margin-bottom: 5px;
}

Now we're done styling the navigation links! Play around with the codes and see if you can come up with different styling.

The next tutorial will show you how to create pseudo-pages.

Second domain giveaway!

UPDATE: Codeislove's second domain giveaway has ended. Thank you to all participants.

Codeislove's second domain giveaway is finally here!

Let me start with the introduction first. This domain giveaway is hosted in conjunction with my 25th birthday, which will be on August 9th (yes, I'm quarter of a century-old now). So this time I will giving away 4 domains of their own choice. Please read the mechanisms properly before posting your entry. I know people can get too excited over this but it is imperative that you understand how this thing works before joining.

When does it start?
This giveaway runs starting on 01 August 2011 until I have 4 people in the list. The time on which the contest commences is 9.30PM UTC+8. To be fair to those who live on the other side of the world (as opposed to where I am), the time difference should be about 12 hours but there won't be any difference on the date.

The mechanisms of this giveaway is fairly the same as the last time.

Prior to applying for domain name...
Before you pick a domain name of your choice, make sure it has not been registered yet. You can check the availability of the name [here].

What domain name extensions can you request?
You can choose either: .com/.net/.org/.info extensions.

The catch!
Right, nothing in this world is truly free, so I have my own price. But no worries, you don't have to pay me anything. What I need from you is simply a) A blog post about this giveaway and, b) Put up this button on your site where it is visible:

domain giveaway

To those who are not participating, you are more than welcomed to advertise this giveaway. I would appreciate it very much. :)

This giveaway is only for those who do not own domain names. That includes past participants who won the domain names already. This is to give chance to others who have not the opportunity yet. Those who apply must also have blogs that have been around and active for at least 3 months. Don't create a blog just for the sake of joining this giveaway.

I will be giving the domains to the first 4 people who posted their entries in the comment section. You HAVE to comment here and here only to be eligible for the giveaway. This is to make tracking of applicants easier. Emailing me your entry or posting on the tagboard will not qualify.

The domain does not come with hosting so you can just use it with your Blogger blogs. Or if you wish, you can apply for hosting somewhere and use the domain name with it. :)

Also, I will pay for the domain names for one year only, after that you may choose to let the domain expire or you can renew it yourself.

Why am I doing this? What's in it for me?
No particular reason and I gain nothing from this. I'm just feeling tad generous on my birthday. :)

If you've read everything above, you may comment in this post using this format:

Name:
Email (valid email please):
Current website URL:
Desired domain name (make sure it is available):
URL of the page where you posted about this giveaway:

Once I have 4 people in the list, I will close this giveaway.

I will be sending out emails to those who are accepted for the domain names giveaway to discuss about several matters. Please check your email regularly.

I've decided to host the giveaway today. Yes today, or rather, tonight. The reason why I didn't announce it earlier is because I want this to be a surprise. The giveaway will start approximately 9.30PM UTC+8 (Brunei) time, which is around 1.30PM UTC.

I will post the mechanisms/details of the contest at around the time mentioned above. So guys, look out for the contest!!

<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Your Blog's Title" href="http://YOURBLOGNAME.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://YOURBLOGNAME.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" />

- Find these codes and replace the USERID and BLOGID with your own user ID and your blog's ID:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/USERID/blogs/BLOGID?alt=json-in-script&callback=listLabels"></script>

The layout is available for download on Blogskins but I also provide a download link here:

Tutorial: How to code a Classic Blogger layout - Part 2

Right, this is the second part of the How to code a Classic Blogger layout series. In Part 1 I've explained how to code the basic structure of the layout so in this part we'll continue on how to add navigation links.

Step 1
Okay, first we are going to create a list. Open up the HTML document that we created in Part 1. Go to the sidebar section (where it says <div id="sidebar"> </div>) The navigation links in this example will be vertically positioned.

The reason why we create a list is that, this is the easiest way to create navigation links. Paste the following code right after the <div id="sidebar">:

<ul>
<li><a href="link1.html">Link 1</a></li>
<li><a href="link2.html">Link 2</a></li>
<li><a href="link3.html">Link 3</a></li>
</ul>

#navigation {
margin: 0 auto;
padding: 0;
list-style: none;
}

Then apply the id to the <ul>:

<ul id="navigation">

The list now looks like this:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Technically we're done with the navigation. But it looks rather too simple. So we'll spice it up a bit.

Step 3
Paste this codes into your stylesheet.

#navigation a {
display: block;
width: 150px;
background-color: #ffccff;
border-left: 5px solid orange;
padding-left: 5px;
color: red;
}

#navigation a:hover {
background-color: #ff99ff;
color: #ffffff;
}

Step 5
Lastly, we also need to space out the links from each other so that they don't look to crowded.

#navigation li {
margin-bottom: 5px;
}

Now we're done styling the navigation links! Play around with the codes and see if you can come up with different styling.

The next tutorial will show you how to create pseudo-pages.

Kitty

Kitty. 27. Blogger, web design hobbyist, compulsive shopper and bibliophile based in Brunei. Enjoys creating and designing websites, dabbling with HTML, CSS and PHP.

Among the interwebs community, I am generally known as Kitty. I hold a bachelor degree in Social Science Education, majoring in History and currently I am pursuing a Masters degree in South East Asian Studies. I enjoy talking to my online friends. You could say I have more friends in the cyberworld than in real life. Because it is easier for me to talk to people without looking at them in the face; I'm a shy person and I'm very self-conscious on how I look. I don't know what people think about me so I'd leave that to you to figure out yourself.

I've been blogging since 2005 (or earlier) though my experience with the internet started back in 2000. My main interest is in web design and development. Other times you can see me wrapped around a book or glued to Astronomy and web design magazines.

The website

This website was created in January 2011 and the domain was purchased by me in late December 2010. Initially the website was intended to house tutorials for Classic Blogger/Blogspot only however over the time it has developed into what you see today.

Several of the tutorials and articles can also be found on Nekonette.com, which is the my main website where I mostly blog about my personal life. Also some of the tutorials here have been moved to that website.
