Tutorial: Adding Disqus comment count to your blog

Blogged by: Kitty on Tuesday, September 27, 2011   |  Leave a comment Facebook comments: comments

If you're deciding to use a different commenting system other than the Blogger's built-in comment system, you can actually opt for Disqus. Now, I won't be explaining how to integrate it into your blog because another website has done that. I'm here just to show how to add the comment counts.

So let's get started. (For those who are simply looking for a way to add the comment count skip to Step 3)

Step 1
You must already have an account on Disqus. To sign up, click here.

Step 2
Go to this website and for a step by step tutorial on how to integrate Disqus commenting system into your blog.

Step 3
Copy the following code just before the </body> tag.

<script type="text/javascript">
/* * * CONFIGURATION VARIABLES: EDIT BEFORE PASTING INTO YOUR WEBPAGE * * */
var disqus_shortname = 'example'; // required: replace example with your forum shortname

/* * * DON'T EDIT BELOW THIS LINE * * */
(function () {
var s = document.createElement('script'); s.async = true;
s.type = 'text/javascript';
s.src = 'http://' + disqus_shortname + '.disqus.com/count.js';
(document.getElementsByTagName('HEAD')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('BODY')[0]).appendChild(s);
}());
</script>

Don't forget to change the one in bold with your Disqus shortname.

Save and refresh your website. The comment count should be there.

Article: Alternative commenting system?

In my previous post I mentioned about the issue over comments not submitted/posted if a visitor is using Mozilla Firefox to view this website. The issue seems to come from third party cookies being blocked. However, I've enabled them in the browser but the error still persists. So far I haven't worked out any solution to that except those who wish to leave comments on Blogger sites have to make sure third party cookies have been enabled on their browsers or use other browsers other than Firefox.

In the meanwhile I've also experimented with other commenting system that can be used on Blogger. For the last few hours I've been toying with Intense Debate and Disqus. Both commenting systems have far more features than the default Blogger commenting system and so reputedly perform much better than Blogger's. Now these two systems have been said to be non-compatible with Blogger Classic template and for some time that seems to be true. But I've managed to work around it and I've successfully tested them on Blogger Classic templates. :)

On how I did it, I'll post the methods in the next post.

I want to thank whoever it is who nominated Codeislove in TearsHeartSoul Webbie Awards. I feel honoured to have my site nominated for this award. I don't expect to win, but I think it'll be good to throw in some competition to the others. ;)

2011 Webbie Awards

Starting tomorrow I will be busy with my graduation ceremony which will take place on next Thursday. I will be having rehearsals for that day and it is imperative for everyone to do it right/correctly on the event day itself because the person who will be handing out the certificates is His Majesty the Sultan himself. So I won't be doing much updates on the site for the next one week or two.

I've also renewed my Cbox subscription. I rarely keep track how long I have before I need to pay for the Premium account. And speaking of Cbox, they have a new product which is the Premium Multithreaded. This new product has more impressive features than the Premium account such as the ability to add new threads for each new article, or user, or group, or event. I'm so tempted to try upgrade my account to the new product but it will cost me a fortune so I decided against it in the end. Blah.

And I still need to do my online paid tasks or otherwise I won't get paid. No money means no more online spending. I better get to it soon.

Ah yes, someone also mentioned that the commenting is not working on Firefox as in even though you click on the 'Post Comment' button, the comment won't be posted/submitted. Is anyone else having this problem?

Tutorial: Add Facebook 'Like' button to your blog

Blogged by: Kitty on Saturday, September 17, 2011   |  Leave a comment Facebook comments: comments

This tutorial will show you how to add Facebook 'like' button to your blog so it would appear only in one place in your blog. Please take note that this tutorial is not the tutorial on how to add Facebook like button into each one of the post in your blog. For that tutorial, jump to the bottom part of this page instead.

Log into Facebook.com and go to http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/

On that page, you will see a configurator box where you can enter your details.

1. In the URL to Like (?) input box, type in your blog URL.

2. Untick the Send Button (XFBML Only) (?) checkbox if you want to display the 'Like' button only (if the checkbox is left ticked, the 'Send' button would also be included).

3. You can change the Layout Style (?) to any style you want.

4. Change the Width (?) to any width you want.

5. If the Show Faces (?) checkbox is ticked, the profile pictures of the people who like your posts will be shown.

6. Choose which Verb to display (?). In this case, choose like.

7. Pick the Color Scheme (?) you want.

8. Choose which Font (?) you want to use.

Once you're done with that, click the Get Code button and a pop-up box will appear. From the drop-down menu on the box, choose your preferred method of implementation. Then copy the codes and paste them into your blog but the codes must not be within the <Blogger> </Blogger> loop.

Save and test it out.

If you want to add Facebook like button into each one of the post in your blog, follow the tutorial below instead.

Paste the following code where you want the button to be displayed but it has to be somewhere within the <Blogger> </Blogger> loop.

<iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=<$BlogItemPermalinkUrl$>&layout=standard&show-faces=true&width=500&height=60&action=like&colorscheme=light" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" style="border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:60px"></iframe>

Save and test it out.

I've finally got my lazy ass to work on a few things on Nekonette and added a couple of Wordpress tutorials there. I've also posted an update on Amalina.org (yes, FINALLY!) and I'm going to actually work on the back-end of Kitty-Kat.org.

Keeping up with a lot of websites is not easy. Creating them is a piece of cake and building them is a lot of fun, but to manage them needs determination and discipline. Two things I lack, apparently. For example, sometimes I wish I could just close down most of them and concentrate on one or two since it'd be a hell lot easier that way, but after considering how much time and effort I've spent into each one of them, closing down seems like a waste of those efforts. A (seemingly) easy solution to it is to merge the websites together. In fact, I've been pondering countless times if I should just merge Codeislove.net with Amalina.org, after all, both websites deal with web development topics. I even consider moving the stuff on Codeislove.net over to Amalina.org and use the CMS script I developed there (I named it Scribe) to power the contents. However, since most of the tutorials on Codeislove.net are for Blogger, it would only make sense if I have them hosted under Blogger, wouldn't it?

To give you an idea how tough it is to manage several websites, here's a complete list of the websites I currently own:

Nekonette.com - personal website
Kitty-Kat.org - secondary personal website for mindless rambles
Codeislove.net - a shack containing articles and tutorials mostly related to Blogger
Amalina.org - testing ground for a blogging script I developed
Serenified.net - website for my book listing
CREATIV Themes Shoppe – website which offer paid services for website layouts/themes
Fleurelle.net - Tumblr blog
Eternalitia - a fanlisting for Helios Eclipse comic
Across the time - a fanlisting for Final Fantasy X-2 song (1000 no Kotoba)

Closed ones:
Chibiholic.net - my very own first domain name. I had this before Nekonette
Teaching Practice Journal - records of my teaching practice
Purrfectly.me - a failed attempt to making a graphic/drawing portfolio

So you can see how stressful it can be to manage those websites. I can't dedicate my attention equally on them because some obviously require more attention than others but all the same I do feel guilty for neglecting the others.

It's time for the Q&A again! Post your questions in the comment section. You can ask me anything with as many questions as you like and I will try my best to answer them all but please refrain yourself from asking too personal questions. :)

In this tutorial, I'll be showing you how to display your all the labels (or tags) in your blog. The technique will be making use of Javascript and the labels will be displayed as a list..

Note: Always, always remember to backup your HTML codes before making any changes to it.

Step 1
Open up your Blogger Dashboard and go to where the HTML editor is.

Step 2
Copy the following codes and paste them where you want them to appear.

<div id="labelList"></div> <script type="text/javascript">
//<![CDATA[
function listLabels(root){
var baseURL = '/search/label/';
var baseHeading = "Categories";
var isFTP = false;
var llDiv = document.getElementById('labelList');
var entry = root.entry;
var h1 = document.createElement('h1');
h1.className = 'sidebar-title';
var h1t = document.createTextNode(baseHeading);
h1.appendChild(h1t);
llDiv.appendChild(h1);
var ul = document.createElement('ul');
ul.id = 'label-list';
var category = entry.category;
labelSort = new Array();
for(p in category){
labelSort[labelSort.length] = [category[p].term];
}
labelSort.sort();
for (var r=0; r < labelSort.length; r++){
var li = document.createElement('li');
var a = document.createElement('a');
if(isFTP){
a.href = baseURL + encodeURIComponent(labelSort[r])+'.html';
}
else {
a.href = baseURL + encodeURIComponent(labelSort[r]);
}
a.innerHTML = labelSort[r] + ' ';
li.appendChild(a);
ul.appendChild(li);
abnk = document.createTextNode(' ');
ul.appendChild(abnk);
}
llDiv.appendChild(ul);
}
//]]>
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/USERID/blogs/BLOGID?alt=json-in-script&callback=listLabels" ></script>

Now, there are things that you need to take note of. Let's take a look at them one by one.

Look for the h1 tags in the codes. They are the tags for the heading and in the codes above, you can find them occurring a few times. You can replace the h1 tags with h2 or h3, etc.

Then look for this piece of code:

var baseHeading = "Categories";

You can change the word Categories to any text you like. For example you can change it to labels, tags, etc.

Next, watch out for this code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/USERID/blogs/BLOGID?alt=json-in-script&callback=listLabels" ></script>

You will need to replace the words USERID and BLOGID with your own userID and blogID.

Save your progress and it's done.

Ok so I've succumbed to temptation and bought the Autumn Fall necklace. I'd probably gonna regret this later but for now I am too excited to even be bothered about it. I'm waiting for the package to arrive, which will take some 3 weeks or so (or longer, it happened before) and by the time it arrives, the pang of regret would have sunk in. :p

I'd be writing up an article soon. It's been quite a while since I wrote an article. It's probably going to be something on methods of laying out websites. Or, I just might do a tutorial, well, whichever comes first.

I've put up the new theme on Nekonette. As I said before, the theme is based on the current layout on Codeislove, with several modifications/additions. Then there's also the Vintage Memories layout that needed to be converted to Wordpress theme. But I'll put it off until next week because I simply don't feel like working on another layout this week. I'm also falling behind in my moderating job at TeahouseMB (hopefully the rest of the staff will forgive me. :p).

I don't really have much to blog this time so this will have to do. :)

Undecided

Working on a new theme for Nekonette. Actually the new theme would be based on the current layout of Codeislove but I've done a major modification to the content area and the comments section. And since I would be using the same design on Nekonette, it stands to reason I cannot have the same layout on two websites simultaneously. So what I'd do is, I'll put up one of Nekonette's old layout here instead.

Tomorrow will see the launching of my university's Pesta Konvo (Convocation Festival) which is going to be held in conjunction with the university's 23rd Convocation Ceremony. Since I will be graduating this year, you could say this is a special one for me. I will be there with the rest of my fellow graduates, but only to see what they offer there. The actual graduation day would be on the 29th September. :)

I still can't decide whether I should buy the Autumn Fall necklace by Essencious Store or not. I really love this piece and it's one of my favourites but I should be saving up money for my December trip so I really don't know what to do! :(

Psst, if you're a jewellery-lover and you haven't checked out Krystal's jewellery store @ Essencious, I suggest you'd better do it now. I love all her designs (I even bought two of her previous designs). Plus, shipping is free so you won't have to pay for the delivery cost. :)

Speaking of stores, I haven't made any updates on the blogshop template I designed some time ago. Read this post if you missed it. Only one person has bought a copy and I haven't been able to make another sale after that. It probably costs too much. :/ But anyway, I'm quite willing to sell it at a lower price, plus, if you need customisations, I can happily do it for you for a small fee.

I'm glad the whole thievery shizz didn't grew to be an e-drama because frankly, I actually questioned my decision to reveal the copycat's identity. She probably didn't deserve the brute attack. But when she went on a rampage mode in her email, I stopped feeling sorry for her. Anyway, to cut the long story short, we've settled the issue (though in not-so amicable manner) so we'll leave this behind us for good.

Blogger's finally introduced the new user interface for the Dashboard. Previously it was only available on draft.blogger.com. It has a sleeker and cleaner design now though it will take some time to adjust to the change. The whole UI has been stretched across the browser, making everything look so much more organised. And I love the post editor. The canvas is a lot wider now (I no longer have to resize the canvas to give more typing room. :)) So if you guys haven't tried it out, you can now change your Dashboard's UI to the new design. XD

Good news, I've recently been promoted to the position of moderator at the super-duper awesome Teahouse MB. If you're a pixeler, or a fan of cute graphics, you must've heard of this message board. But if you haven't, it's never too late to join this awesome community! :D

I still need to work on Amalina.org! I've freaking neglected it for so long! Honestly, sometimes I feel like closing down the website but after thinking how much time and effort I've put into building it (I built the platform from scratch using HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL), I abandoned the thought. But I'm so uninspired and I don't feel like doing anything on it. :/

Anyway, I'll be going for my Masters degree interview tomorrow. I really hope I will get it. Wish me luck guys.

A little thief

Early this evening my friend Susan left a message on my tagboard which compelled me to do a little investigation. She told me someone had copied some of my tutorials and posted them on the person's own website.

Curious to find out who this little thief is, I clicked on a link that brought me to yeoju-onlinediary.blogspot.com. Upon my arrival on the blog I was greeted with a message that says, "Welcome to my blog". At first I was like, "Umm, where are the rest of the contents?" Took me a few seconds to realise I was supposed to click on the message to reveal the contents. Had Blogger the feature to add splash page, I'm sure Xue Lee (the website owner) would have done just that.

Anyway, moving on. Once the contents were on display, my eyes were immediately attracted to the navigation menu, and the word 'Toturials' caught my attention. I clicked on it. The page loads to take me the 'toturials' main page. Scrolling down the page I saw a list of warnings to the visitors to remind them not to copy the tutorials. Fine, scrolling down the page some more. There were a list of random tutorials there and then BAM!, I saw some tutorials that have the same titles as mine. Not wanting to accuse anyone without a hard evidence, I decided to just click on the links.

I then proceeded to read the tutorials and by the end of each one of them I wasn't sure whether I should feel flattered or insulted, because every single word on the tutorials are exactly the same as mine. Even the styling for displaying the codes are the same!

What amused me the most were these sentences:

U need my permission if U want to copy n paste.....
And did she even ask for mine?

I realy apreciate if U could respect my blog....
I'm sure she threw this out of the window the moment she copied my tutorials.

Enjoy reading and learning guyz...
Oh yes, I've learnt my lesson: that noobs wouldn't stop ripping off tutorials from other people.

Plz credits me k...
..for copying other people's work.

Actually I didn't plan to reveal the offender's identity but then I thought, if I don't do it, people will never learn their lesson. Let this be a reminder to everyone else.

I've sent a warning to Xue Lee, and hopefully she will take the tutorials down soon. And if she doesn't do it within 24 hours (okay, maybe 72 hours max), she can expect to receive some notice from the Blogger admin.

Oh wow, I'm so generous. Not only did I post her name here, I even provided traffics to her website. :p

Copy the following codes and paste them where you want them to appear.

<div id="labelList"></div> <script type="text/javascript">
//<![CDATA[
function listLabels(root){
var baseURL = '/search/label/';
var baseHeading = "Categories";
var isFTP = false;
var llDiv = document.getElementById('labelList');
var entry = root.entry;
var h1 = document.createElement('h1');
h1.className = 'sidebar-title';
var h1t = document.createTextNode(baseHeading);
h1.appendChild(h1t);
llDiv.appendChild(h1);
var ul = document.createElement('ul');
ul.id = 'label-list';
var category = entry.category;
labelSort = new Array();
for(p in category){
labelSort[labelSort.length] = [category[p].term];
}
labelSort.sort();
for (var r=0; r < labelSort.length; r++){
var li = document.createElement('li');
var a = document.createElement('a');
if(isFTP){
a.href = baseURL + encodeURIComponent(labelSort[r])+'.html';
}
else {
a.href = baseURL + encodeURIComponent(labelSort[r]);
}
a.innerHTML = labelSort[r] + ' ';
li.appendChild(a);
ul.appendChild(li);
abnk = document.createTextNode(' ');
ul.appendChild(abnk);
}
llDiv.appendChild(ul);
}
//]]>
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/USERID/blogs/BLOGID?alt=json-in-script&callback=listLabels" ></script>

Now, there are things that you need to take note of. Let's take a look at them one by one.

Look for the h1 tags in the codes. They are the tags for the heading and in the codes above, you can find them occurring a few times. You can replace the h1 tags with h2 or h3, etc.

Then look for this piece of code:

var baseHeading = "Categories";

You can change the word Categories to any text you like. For example you can change it to labels, tags, etc.

Next, watch out for this code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/USERID/blogs/BLOGID?alt=json-in-script&callback=listLabels" ></script>

You will need to replace the words USERID and BLOGID with your own userID and blogID.

Save your progress and it's done.

Just a quick one

Jumbled post

Among the interwebs community, I am generally known as Kitty. I hold a bachelor degree in Social Science Education, majoring in History and currently I am pursuing a Masters degree in South East Asian Studies. I enjoy talking to my online friends. You could say I have more friends in the cyberworld than in real life. Because it is easier for me to talk to people without looking at them in the face; I'm a shy person and I'm very self-conscious on how I look. I don't know what people think about me so I'd leave that to you to figure out yourself.

I've been blogging since 2005 (or earlier) though my experience with the internet started back in 2000. My main interest is in web design and development. Other times you can see me wrapped around a book or glued to Astronomy and web design magazines.

The website

This website was created in January 2011 and the domain was purchased by me in late December 2010. Initially the website was intended to house tutorials for Classic Blogger/Blogspot only however over the time it has developed into what you see today.

Several of the tutorials and articles can also be found on Nekonette.com, which is the my main website where I mostly blog about my personal life. Also some of the tutorials here have been moved to that website.
